This summer, I’m excited to open the doors for a special two‑day Mendiani Drumming Workshop here in Grand Junction — a chance to explore rhythm, culture, and community through one of West Africa’s most joyful and meaningful traditions.

Mendiani is a girls’ coming‑of‑age celebration from Guinea, known for its vibrant music, dynamic movement, and deep cultural symbolism. In this workshop, we’ll learn rhythms inspired by Mendiani traditions in a way that is respectful, educational, and accessible for all levels — whether you’re brand‑new to drumming or already part of an ensemble.
🎶 What You’ll Experience
Over the course of the weekend, participants will learn:
- Foundational West African rhythms
- Ensemble drumming and call‑and‑response
- Dundun and djembe technique
- Cultural context and meaning behind Mendiani traditions
- A short group performance piece we’ll build together
Drums will be provided, and beginners are absolutely welcome.
