Ras Raqs began with rhythm — not just the sound of it, but the culture, discipline, and history behind it. My musical foundation is in West African and Middle Eastern percussion, especially the Darbuka — known as the Dumbek across the Middle East and the Tablah in Egypt. I trained in the traditional Arabic drumming styles used for dance, and I studied with a master of Al Raqs Sharqi, the classical art of belly dance.

That word — Raqs — means “music for dance.” It’s rhythm with purpose. Rhythm that moves people. Rhythm that carries culture.

Ras Raqs grew out of that world: a place where music is not just performed but lived. Where precision and expression meet. Where the drummer is responsible for the energy of the room and the integrity of the tradition.
